An area rug can really update and brighten a space. It is best to avoid buying rug that is too small or too large for your space, as this would make the room feel off balance. Here are some tips on buying the right size rug for your home.
Living Room - To make your living room look spacious, concentrate on placing most of your furniture on the rug. You should look to place all four legs of your couch on the rug. However, if your couch is against a wall, you could get away with only the front legs on the rug. Your rug should extend at least 7 inches on either side of your furniture.
Dining Room - Your rug should be big enough to ensure that when chairs are pushed in and out, that they don’t get caught in the rug. Once you measure your table, add 56 inches to each side.
Bedroom - If you are planning on buying one large rug to be placed under your bed, choose one that extends at least 2 feet from either side of your bed. If you are on a budget, opt for a medium size rug at the foot of the bed or 2 small rugs at both sides of the bed.
Hallways - A runner can really warm up a hallway. To find a runner that fits your hallway, measure the length and width of your hall way and subtract 12 inches from the length and the width.
